Choline, betaine, and methionine are involved inmethyl group metabolism, which is essential fornormal liver function. Choline, as an integralcomponent of lecithin (phosphatidylcholine), is usedfor synthesis and maintenance of normal cellmembranes. Choline deficiency results in steepincreases in serum enzyme markers of liver injury.Animals deficient in choline and inositol have anexcess liver accumulation of fat. Inositol and cholinesupplementation of animals prone to fatty liversprevents this liver dysfunction.

Taraxacum (dandelion) has been traditionally used asa detoxifying herb working principally on the liverand gallbladder. This herb is thought to stimulate theelimination of toxins and is one of the strongestcholagogues and choleretics known.

Silybum marianum, milk thistle, is rich in flavonoidsknown collectively as silymarin. Silymarin has alsobeen shown to support healthy liver function under avariety of environmental stress factors such asalcohol consumption and exposure to pollutants andother potentially harmful substances. Silymarincompounds are known for their antioxidant activitiespreventing damaging lipid peroxidation by excessivefree radical levels.

Cynara scolymus (artichoke) has been usedmedicinally for centuries. Similar to milk thistle, it isbeneficial to the liver as it protects it againstenvironmental and infection-generated toxins.

Extracts of artichoke can stimulate the flow of bilefrom the liver and prevent cholestasis. It also canprotect liver cells from oxidative damage. Cynara'susefulness in liver support is thought to be due to itscontent of caffeoylquinic acids, e.g. cynarin, andflavonoids.

Curcumin has been demonstrated to be a potentantioxidant, and may also provide important supportfor healthy liver function.
